poΙDcast BUDDIES

Strengthen inclusion of people with Intellectual disability through pairing podcasting with volunteers on environmental issues

THE AIM

The aims of the “poΙDcast BUDDIES” project are multi-faceted, focusing on empowering inclusion, environmental awareness, digital transformation, and skill development among people with intellectual disabilities (pwID), volunteers, educators, and professionals. The specific objectives include increasing accessibility and inclusiveness in adult education, promoting environmental awareness and action against climate change, fostering local learning centers and innovative learning spaces, addressing digital transformation, improving competencies of educators and adult education staff, and supporting inclusion and diversity in education. The project aims to achieve these objectives through the development of methodologies, guidebooks, and podcast episodes, as well as through activities such as training sessions and multiplier events. Additionally, the project seeks to engage policy makers, public and private organizations, other NGOs, parents/carers associations, and stakeholders in the field of podcasting to promote inclusive practices and empower pwID in various aspects of society.

THE IDEA BEHIND

The “poΙDcast BUDDIES” project aims to empower people with intellectual disabilities (pwID) by pairing them with volunteers to create podcasts on environmental issues. This innovative approach combines the methodology of 1-1 volunteer-pwID pairing from Best Buddies Greece with podcasting technology and environmental advocacy. The project also positions NGOs supporting pwID as local learning centers for community members of all abilities, fostering inclusion and skill development. This initiative addresses the urgent need to shift away from a medical model towards a human rights framework for people with disabilities, as advocated by the European Commission. By engaging pwID in environmental action and advocacy, the project promotes their inclusion, independence, and participation in society. Additionally, it aligns with the goals of the European Green Deal, aiming to achieve climate change neutrality by 2050. Participating organizations, such as Best Buddies Greece and Chance Association, have identified the need to advance their programs for pwID inclusion and advocacy. “poΙDcast BUDDIES” addresses these needs by providing training in green skills, digital technologies, and environmental activism. It also supports educators and volunteers in building their capacity and learning while volunteering. Overall, the project aims to empower pwID to advocate for the environment, gain new skills, and foster inclusion, while also benefiting educators, volunteers, and participating organizations.
